Pampaneira
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
The lowest of the three villages strung up the Poqueira gorge, Pampaneira sits at about 1,060 metres on the slopes of Sierra Nevada, below Bubión and Capileira. Its name, like other Alpujarra names ending in -eira, predates the Castilian conquest that drove out the Moriscos. Today its craft shops sell ceramics, leather and local cheese and ham, and guided walks set off into the mountains.
Highlights
- Walks up the Poqueira gorge towards the foot of Mulhacén
- Craft shops selling ceramics, leather goods and clothing
- Locally produced cheese and cured ham
- The Entierro de la zorra: a firework-stuffed 'fox' paraded and burned
- The Sierra Nevada, whose protected park covers the whole municipality
