The Maestrazgo and the Matarraña

3 days · ~6 h 55 driving ·Hill towns, Castles

Inland from Valencia lies high, thinly populated country where Valencia meets Aragon, and this trip crosses it in three days. Culla and Morella, a walled town crowned by its castle, belong to the old Maestrazgo, as do Cantavieja and Mirambel on the Teruel side. The route then drops into the Matarraña, with the Gothic castle and stone bridge of Valderrobres and the stone villages of La Fresneda and Calaceite, before heading west to Zaragoza.
