Abruzzo: the Gran Sasso and the Majella

4 days · ~8 h 35 driving ·Mountains, Food

Four days in the mountains of Abruzzo, starting and ending on the Adriatic at Pescara. Guardiagrele, on the slopes of the Majella, is known for its goldsmiths and Pacentro for the towers of its castle; Pescocostanzo keeps a tradition of bobbin lace, and Scanno sits above a mountain lake. Further north, Navelli grows saffron, Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel del Monte stand below the high plain of Campo Imperatore, and the great Bourbon fortress of Civitella del Tronto closes the loop.
