San Ginesio

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

It is called the balcony of the Sibillini: from 680 metres the view runs from the Conero to the Sibillini peaks and on to the Gran Sasso. Also known as the town of a hundred churches, San Ginesio keeps its medieval walls with towers and arrow slits, and a Collegiata with a late-Gothic terracotta façade from 1421. Its patron, the Roman mime Genesius, is the patron saint of actors.

Highlights

  • The Collegiata, with terracotta work by Enrico Alemanno; interior closed since 2016
  • The late 13th-century pilgrims' hospital and its low-columned portico
  • The 14th-century walls and Porta Picena, the main gate
  • Ritorno degli esuli, a June re-enactment held every three years
  • The Monti Sibillini National Park, which takes in the town
