Servigliano

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Unlike its hilltop neighbours, Servigliano sits on the flat floor of the Tenna valley, because the old village slid downhill in 1771. Pope Clement XIV had it rebuilt as Castel Clementino, a near-perfect walled square of about 140 metres a side, with straight streets linking its gates. Outside the walls, a former prison camp of both world wars is now the Parco della Pace.

Highlights

  • The square walled town with Porta Marina, Porta Pia and Porta Santo Spirito
  • The Collegiata di San Marco Evangelista at the end of the main street
  • Santa Maria del Piano, older than the town, with a 15th-century oratory
  • Parco della Pace, the former prison camp, a memorial to the victims of war
