Guido Torelli, a Visconti captain granted the fief in 1406, gave Montechiarugolo's castle much of its present look, and a century later it welcomed Pope Paul III and King Francis I of France. The fortress stands on a natural terrace above the Enza, on the border with Reggio Emilia, and legend says the fairy Bema still wanders its rooms on the night of 18 May.
