For a few decades around 1600 the Bentivoglio marquises made this village by the Po a small capital, and their architect Giovan Battista Aleotti gave it Piazza Bentivoglio, a square of about 100 metres a side framed by arcades. The river has flooded it many times, in 1951 reaching the keystones of those arches. The naïve painter Antonio Ligabue lived here, and the palace keeps a museum devoted to him.

Highlights

  • Piazza Bentivoglio, Aleotti's arcaded Renaissance square
