Sabbioneta
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Vespasiano Gonzaga built Sabbioneta between 1554 and 1591 as the fortress and capital of his small state, following Renaissance ideas of the ideal city. Inside its walls on the plain between the Po and the Oglio stand his ducal palace, the long Galleria degli Antichi and Scamozzi's Teatro all'Antica, the first modern building made purely as a theatre. Since 2008 it has shared UNESCO status with Mantua.
Highlights
- Teatro all'Antica (1590), designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi
- Palazzo del Giardino, frescoed by Bernardino Campi and his workshop
- The Incoronata church (1590), holding Vespasiano Gonzaga's mausoleum
- The 1824 synagogue, recalling the town's Hebrew printing press
- Vespasiano's embankments, a ring of about twenty kilometres to walk
