Sancerre
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Vines have been the main living on Sancerre's isolated hill since the 12th century, today largely Sauvignon Blanc for the white wine that carries the town's name. The old town climbs the gentler south-west slope to a summit 200 metres above the Loire. In 1572–73 its Huguenots held out for eight months against a Catholic siege, and in nearby Chavignol goat's milk becomes the famous crottin.
Highlights

- Crottin de Chavignol, the raw-milk goat's cheese of the next village
- The Belvédère du Graveron above Chavignol, looking over the Sancerrois
