The Knights Templar ran this outpost on the Larzac plateau as a farming estate, raising grain, horses and sheep. When the Hospitallers took over, the villagers walled the town in the mid-15th century against roving mercenaries, and the ring of towers and ramparts survives almost whole. Craftspeople working in enamel, pottery and weaving now occupy many of the old houses.
