Peyre
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Like a swallow's nest, as one 19th-century writer put it, Peyre clings to the sheer cliff of the Causse Rouge on the right bank of the Tarn, a few kilometres downstream from Millau. Its houses seem stacked one on top of another, and its Occitan name means 'stone'. Once Saint-Christophe de Peyre, it was run by its own consuls and held for the Catholic side in the Wars of Religion.
