Burgundy: hilltops, abbeys and castles
Two days west of Dijon, through the farmland and wooded hills of the Auxois and the Yonne. Châteauneuf keeps its medieval castle on a spur above the Burgundy Canal, Montréal an early Gothic collegiate church, and Vézelay a Romanesque basilica that has drawn pilgrims for nine centuries. On the way back come Noyers, with half-timbered houses in a bend of the Serein, and Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, where aniseed sweets are still made in the old abbey.
