Across Extremadura
A week from Madrid to Seville through Extremadura, one of the emptiest corners of Spain. After Valverde de la Vera, in the valleys below the Gredos mountains, the route visits the great monastery of Guadalupe and Trujillo, home town of Francisco Pizarro. The Sierra de Gata follows, with San Martín de Trevejo, where a local language called fala is still spoken, and the castle ruins of Trevejo. The south brings Olivenza, Portuguese until 1801, and the towns of Jerez de los Caballeros and Llerena.
