Trebisacce

Until the mid-20th century Trebisacce was a fishing village; today it is the main commercial and seaside centre of the upper Ionian coast of Calabria, with Blue Flag beaches since 2015. The old town keeps to a terrace 73 metres up, above the newer Marina, and its name probably comes from the Greek for 'little table'. Olive trees surround it, and on Sundays a market fills the whole historic centre.

Highlights

  • San Nicola di Mira, the parish church of Byzantine origin
  • Remains of the 15th-century walls around the old town
  • The Sunday market spreading across the entire old town
  • Blue Flag beaches along the Ionian Sea
  • Broglio, site of one of Calabria's earliest protohistoric villages
