Altomonte

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

Much of Altomonte's character goes back to Filippo Sangineto, the 14th-century lord who renamed the town, extended its walls and built the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione. It stands on a promontory at about 455 metres, above a plain of olive groves and vineyards watered by the Esaro. The Torre dei Pallotta, probably Norman, still rises over the old town.

Highlights

  • Santa Maria della Consolazione, with works commissioned from Simone Martini and Bernardo Daddi
  • Filippo Sangineto's funerary monument, placed on the apse wall in 1372
  • Torre dei Pallotta, a major example of Norman military architecture in Calabria
  • Local vineyards, linked to the Balbine wines praised by Pliny the Elder
