Tagliacozzo

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

The town grew at 740 metres on the slopes of Monte Civita, and its name may come from the Latin for 'a cut in the rock', after the cleft between Civita and the next peak. On the nearby Palentini plains Charles of Anjou defeated Conradin in 1268, a battle Dante recalls in the Inferno. The Orsini later ran a mint here and built the Palazzo Ducale.
