Collalto Sabino
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
On the old frontier between the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples, Collalto Sabino once minted its own coins and received Emperor Frederick II. The village climbs a mountain spur south-east of Lake Turano, ringed by 15th-century walls and crowned by a baronial castle that passed from the Savelli to the Strozzi, the Soderini and finally the Barberini.
Highlights
- The baronial castle, owned by the Barberini from 1641
- A walk along the 15th-century walls that still enclose the village
- Palazzo Latini and the small church of Madonna della Speranza
- Mountain trails in the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia nature reserve (IT)
- Lake Turano, just to the north-west
