In July 1522, with the men away in the fields, the women and young people of Scheggino drove off a siege, and a festival still re-enacts it every 23 July. Built in the 12th century as an outpost of the Duchy of Spoleto, the village runs down from its half-ruined tower to the Nera in the heart of the Valnerina. Trout springs and a truffle museum speak for its food.

Highlights

  • Festa delle Donne on 23 July, re-enacting the defence of 1522
  • Frescoes begun by lo Spagna in the apse of San Nicola
  • The truffle museum on Piazza Carlo Urbani
  • Fonti di Valcasana, a spring-fed park long used for trout farming
  • A cycle path on the old Spoleto–Norcia railway line (IT)
