San Giovanni in Marignano

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Known as the granary of the Malatesta, the village kept its wealth underground: in the 15th century over 200 grain pits lay beneath it, some still visible in the main street. Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta walled it to protect them, and the clock tower still has the holes for its drawbridge chains. In June the Notte delle Streghe recalls witches said to stop here en route to Benevento.

Highlights

  • Grain pits visible in the paving of the Via di Mezzo
  • The 24-metre Torre Civica, the one surviving town gate
  • Teatro Massari, a small 19th-century horseshoe theatre in a former oratory
  • Notte delle Streghe, between 21 and 24 June
  • Antica Fiera di Santa Lucia, in the week around 13 December
