San Donato in Poggio
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Travellers on the old road between Florence and Siena changed their money at San Donato, the last sizeable village on Florentine land, and the two republics twice signed peace treaties here. Its 13th-century walls survive with two gates, Porta Fiorentina and Porta Senese, leading to Piazza Malaspina and its octagonal well. Just outside stands the Romanesque pieve, with a font by Giovanni della Robbia.
