Pergola
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Gubbio founded Pergola as a free commune in 1234 to bring work and trade to the people of nearby castles in the upper Cesano valley. It soon filled with workshops and became a market town fought over by the Malatesta, Montefeltro and Della Rovere, later living on textiles and tanning. Its best-known treasure, the gilded bronzes found at Cartoceto in 1946, is shown in a museum in town.
