Arcevia

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Until Pope Pius VII renamed it in 1817, Arcevia was Rocca Contrada, a stronghold held in turn by Braccio da Montone and Francesco Sforza's troops. It stands at about 535 metres above the Misa and Nevola valleys, where the Marche countryside meets the first Apennine ridges, and has been a summer retreat since the 16th century. A ring of castles survives in its hamlets.

Highlights

  • Collegiata di San Medardo, with Signorelli altarpieces and Della Robbia ceramics
  • The Gothic Palazzo Comunale beside its 36-metre civic tower
  • San Francesco, rebuilt in rococo style by Lorenzo Bossi in 1750
  • Castles in the hamlets, among them Nidastore, Loretello and Piticchio
  • Remains of the Cassero fortress in the Giardino Leopardi
