Monteverde
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
For more than a century the Grimaldi princes of Monaco held this village on a steep height between the Osento and Ofanto rivers, and their name stays with its four-towered castle, now home to a museum on women in peasant life. Until 1818 it was a bishop's seat. Around it lie the San Pietro reservoir and the Mezzana forest, and since 2010 the rare black stork has nested here.
