Bovino
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
After the Byzantine emperor Basil I rebuilt its walls in 876, Bovino's streets were laid out in the narrow pattern they keep today, many still stepped and cobbled. The hill town stands on a terrace in the wooded Daunian Mountains above the Tavoliere plain, with viewpoints beside remains of the Roman wall. Its Norman castle, made into a palace by the Guevara dukes, houses the diocesan museum.
