Etroubles

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Halfway along the road from Aosta to the Great St Bernard Pass, Étroubles has watched Roman troops, Via Francigena pilgrims and Napoleon pass through; he slept here on 20 May 1800. For centuries its men earned a living guiding travellers over the pass. Since 2005 the whole village has been an open-air museum of contemporary art on the theme of the journey.

Highlights

  • À Étroubles, avant toi sont passés..., artworks scattered through the village
  • The Romanesque bell tower of a church that has disappeared
  • Tour de la Vachère, a 12th-century tower on Roman foundations
  • The 1853 cooperative dairy, now a museum of fontina and butter
  • The old communal oven at Éternod, still fired for black bread
