Deruta

Maiolica has made this hill town on the left bank of the Tiber known far beyond Umbria. In the 16th century about fifty kilns were firing lustreware in gold and ruby red and 'Bella Donna' plates painted with idealised portraits. Today hundreds of ceramic firms remain, and in the small workshops of the walled old town you can still watch pieces being painted by hand.

Highlights

  • Museo regionale della Ceramica and the San Salvatore kiln
  • Over 700 maiolica ex-votos in the Santuario della Madonna del Bagno
  • Piazza dei Consoli, with the town hall and church of San Francesco
  • The Pinacoteca, with a Perugino fresco from San Francesco
  • Hand-painted pottery from the workshops inside the walls
