Bettona

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Known as the balcony of Umbria, Bettona looks out from its walls towards Perugia, Assisi and Spello, and stretches of Etruscan masonry survive in the medieval circuit. Perugia burned the town in 1352, and it was rebuilt smaller but stronger. Its museum in the Palazzetto del Podestà shows paintings by Perugino and a self-portrait bust by Canova, found by chance in a council storeroom in 2016.

Highlights

  • The town museum, with three works by Perugino and Canova's 1812 self-portrait bust
  • The walls, part Etruscan, with views over Perugia, Assisi and Spello
  • Frescoes of the Passion from Giotto's school, dated 1394, in the Oratorio di Sant'Andrea
  • Santa Maria Maggiore, its apse painted in 1939 by the Futurist Gerardo Dottori
  • The Sagra dell'Oca in summer, and the local olive oil
