Castiglione di Garfagnana
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
For centuries Lucca held on to this walled town as an outpost surrounded by Este territory, because it controlled the road to the San Pellegrino pass over the Apennines. Its 13th-century walls and great towers, the Torrioni, still ring the village on its spur above the Serchio valley, and two churches use wall towers as belfries. The brass band, the Filarmonica Alpina, dates from 1858.
