Villefranche-de-Conflent
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Squeezed between the Têt, the Cady and a steep peak, this walled Catalan town has guarded the road into Cerdagne since the counts of Conflent fortified it in the 9th century. Vauban added Fort Libéria on the height above, and walls and fort are now UNESCO-listed. The station is where the Yellow Train begins its mountain run.
