Penne-d'Agenais
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Its name comes from a Celtic word for a crest, and Penne-d'Agenais does sit on a rocky spur 120 metres above the Lot, with its old river port at the foot. Richard the Lionheart fortified the castle, and the town changed hands through the Albigensian Crusade, the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. A revival begun in 1979 set out to bring contemporary art into the old streets.
