Najac
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Strung along a ridge above a bend in the Aveyron, Najac runs from a partly ruined castle at one end to a bastide faubourg of timber-framed houses and arcades at the other. Villagers built the castle in 1253 on the orders of Alphonse de Poitiers, and the church of Saint-Jean too, imposed on them as a punishment for Cathar beliefs.
Highlights
- The château, built in 1253 and still dominating the ridge
- The 13th-century church of Saint-Jean above the lower village
- The faubourg's arcaded square and timber-framed houses
- The listed Pont Saint-Blaise over the Aveyron
- The Fontaine, the town gate and the Maison du Sénéchal
