Bruniquel
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
Two castles stand side by side above the Aveyron at Bruniquel: an old one built in the 12th century on a fortress said to go back to Queen Brunehaut, and a younger one from the 15th. Below them, the village is a mix of pink stone and red tile, with a belfry, gateways and walls. The setting appears in the 1975 film Le Vieux Fusil.
Highlights
- The old castle's Renaissance gallery hanging over the valley
- The prehistory museum in the young castle, with finds from local caves
- The Bruniquel Cave, with traces of Neanderthal activity (closed to the public)
- The annual festival devoted to Jacques Offenbach, held at the castles since 1997
