Entrevaux
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
A revolt made Entrevaux a royal town: in 1536 its people rose against an occupying governor and handed the town to the French king, who freed them from taxes. The walled town fills a rocky spur in a bend of the Var, entered by a fortified bridge, the Porte Royale. A zigzag path, fortified after Vauban's plans, climbs to the citadel high above.
Highlights
- The citadel above the town, reached by a fortified zigzag path (FR)
- The former cathedral, with a 1647 Assumption and a 1717 organ
- A motorcycle museum of over a hundred early machines
- Secca de boeuf, thin slices of dried beef
- The Nice to Digne mountain railway, with a summer steam train
