Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne
Member of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France
An abbey founded around 855 gave this Corrèze town its name: the founder is said to have called the site "bellus locus", a beautiful place. Monks from Solignac built a Benedictine house that grew rich on the pilgrim road to Compostela, and the medieval town spread around it on the banks of the Dordogne. Only the great abbey church of Saint-Pierre survives; its 14th-century steeple also served as the belfry.
Highlights
- The abbey church of Saint-Pierre, all that remains of the Benedictine abbey
- The separate 14th-century steeple that also served as the town belfry
- Riverside walks along the Dordogne, which forms the whole eastern edge of the commune
- Old quarters such as the Faubourg de la Grave, outside the abbey walls
