Fortified in the 12th and 13th centuries where the Aguanal and Ea streams meet in La Rioja Alta, this village gained its castle-palace in the late 15th century under the Velasco lords. In 1463 it was one of five founding towns of the Hermandad de Álava. Its Basque name, Saja Zaharra or 'old Saja', sets it apart from neighbouring Sajuela.
