Pedraza
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
Two sons of King Francis I of France spent two years as hostages in the castle here, a fortress ringed by a precipice at the edge of this walled Segovian village. Most of Pedraza's houses and small palaces date from the 16th and 17th centuries, when merino wool from local flocks was exported to northern Europe. There is still only one way in and out: the old town gate.
Highlights
- The castle, with its great keep and moat above a sheer drop
- The Puerta de la Villa, the single gateway, rebuilt in the 16th century
- The old prison by the gate, now a museum of medieval jail life
- La Noche de las Velas in July: candlelit streets and concerts
