Castellar de la Frontera

The whole of old Castellar sits inside the walls of a Moorish and Christian fortress on a rock above the Guadarranque reservoir, once a link in the Nasrid frontier defences. In the 1970s its people moved to a new town below, and German newcomers took over the empty houses. All around spread the cork-oak woods of Los Alcornocales, whose bark is still stripped for a living.
