Alcalá del Júcar
Member of Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España
Whitewashed houses cling to the limestone cliffs of the Júcar gorge, many of them dug straight into the rock, with steep car-free lanes climbing to a castle on a crag above. The Almohads built the fortress, which Alfonso VIII of Castile took in 1211. Below, a much-repaired bridge spans the river and a bullring bends its walls to fit the uneven ground.
Highlights
- The Almohad castle, strengthened with a pentagonal tower in the 15th century
- Cave houses and the Cuevas del Diablo and Masagó, now bars and restaurants
- The irregular bullring, shaped to the terrain and rebuilt in 1900
- Fiestas for San Lorenzo, 7–15 August, with bull running and fireworks
- The medieval market held during Holy Week
