The Castelli Romani from Rome
Within an hour of Rome, two villages in the Alban Hills make an easy day out, each above its own volcanic lake. Castel Gandolfo looks down on the crater lake of Albano and has long been the summer retreat of the popes. A short drive round the rim, Nemi sits above a smaller lake and is known for its wild strawberries.
