Vipiteno – Sterzing

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Fifteen kilometres below the Brenner Pass, this Eisack valley town lived on transit trade and on silver from nearby valleys, which the Fugger of Augsburg sorted here. After a fire in 1443 the New Town was rebuilt with crenellated late-Gothic houses and covered bay windows, divided from the Old Town by the 46-metre Zwölferturm. Behind it rises the Rosskopf, with ski lifts and a long toboggan run.

Highlights

  • The Zwölferturm, the 15th-century tower between Old Town and New Town
  • The Gothic parish church of Unsere liebe Frau im Moos, just outside town
  • Hans Multscher's Gothic altar, now shown in the Multscher Museum
  • The late-Gothic Town Hall, with a Roman altar to Mithras in its courtyard
  • A toboggan run of almost 10 km on the Rosskopf
