Triora

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Triora is known as the village of witches, after the trials of women accused of witchcraft held here in 1587. It stands at 780 metres on a sunny slope above the Argentina valley, once ringed by walls and five fortresses, and was partly burned by Nazi troops in July 1944. The ethnographic museum gives its cellars to the witch trials, and every August a festival takes up the theme.

Highlights

  • The Ethnographic and Witchcraft Museum, with trial records in the basement
  • The Collegiata, with Taddeo di Bartolo's Baptism of Christ from 1397
  • San Bernardino, a 15th-century country church with frescoes partly by Canavesio
  • The Ponte di Loreto, a single span 112 metres above the Argentina gorge
  • Festivals for witches in August, mushrooms in September, Halloween in October
