Tremezzo
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Rich local families trading with northern Europe built most of the villas on this stretch of Lake Como's western shore in the 17th century, and from the mid-1800s the hotels followed. Tremezzo is essentially a strip of lakefront, with narrow paths climbing the hill behind. Its star is Villa Carlotta, whose terraced gardens bloom with camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons.
Highlights
- Villa Carlotta, with works by Canova and about 8 hectares of gardens
- Villa Meier's public park, joined by Pietro Lingeri's bridge over the road
- Villa AMILA, Lingeri's ship-shaped rationalist home for a motorboat club
- Villa Sola Busca, or La Quiete, where the poet Parini worked as tutor
