Sesto al Reghena

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Sesto takes its name from a Roman staging post six miles from Concordia, but the village grew around the abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis, founded in the 8th century and fortified after Hungarian raids. One of its seven towers survives as the entrance, leading into a wide courtyard with a brick bell tower. Around it spreads the low Friulian plain, where Ippolito Nievo set pages of his best-known novel.

Highlights

  • The fortified Abbey of Santa Maria in Sylvis
  • Frescoes of Hell, Paradise and Saint Michael in the abbey vestibule, around 1450
  • Palazzo della Cancelleria, a brick building beside the bell tower
  • The Fontana di Venchiaredo, a literary spot linked to Nievo and Pasolini
  • Villa Freschi, a Venetian villa at Ramuscello
