Castiglione del Lago

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

This limestone promontory was once the fourth island of Lake Trasimeno, until the water between it and the shore was filled in. Inside its walls and three gates, the streets were laid out under the della Corgna, who ruled here in the 16th and 17th centuries from a palace frescoed by Pomarancio. A walkway with arrow slits facing the lake links the palace to the Rocca del Leone.

Highlights

  • Palazzo della Corgna, with halls frescoed by Pomarancio and Salvio Savini
  • Rocca del Leone and its triangular tower above the lake
  • Chiesa di San Domenico (1638), with a coffered wooden ceiling
  • Fagiolina del Trasimeno, a small local bean protected by Slow Food
