Casale Marittimo

From its hill above the Val di Cecina, twelve kilometres from the coast, Casale Marittimo looks over land the Etruscans settled around 700 BC. The Casa Nocera tombs yielded two stone statues among the oldest free-standing sculptures found in Italy, now in Florence. The village was later a castle of the Della Gherardesca counts, and the Arco Cancellieri still frames its Piazza del Popolo.
