Capalbio

Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia

·

Nicknamed 'little Athens' for its importance in the Renaissance, Capalbio is a walled hill town at the southern tip of Tuscany, close to the border with Lazio. Charlemagne gave its castle to the Tre Fontane abbey in 805; later, under Siena, the Orsini completed the Rocca and the walls. Below the town lie 12 kilometres of beach, the coastal Lake Burano and the vineyards of the Capalbio DOC.

Highlights

  • The Rocca Aldobrandesca and a walk along the town walls
  • San Nicola church, with medieval and Renaissance frescoes
  • The Giardino dei Tarocchi, in the countryside nearby
  • Capalbio DOC wines: red, white, rosé and Vin Santo
  • Capalbio Cinema, an international short film festival
