Calascibetta
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Arabs set up a fortified camp on this rock facing Enna in the 9th century, and the name still carries their word for fortress, qal'at. In 1062 Roger I built a castle and walls here to besiege Enna, and later the Aragonese kings favoured the town: Peter II died there in 1342. Calascibetta stands 880 metres up in the Erei mountains and keeps its medieval street plan.
