Borghetto
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
Restored houses straddle the Mincio in this tiny walled hamlet of Valeggio, where mill buildings line the river and some of their wheels turn again. Above it runs the Ponte Visconteo, a fortified bridge and dam that Gian Galeazzo Visconti built in 1393–95 to seal his duchy's eastern border. Each June the bridge hosts one long table where Valeggio's tortellini are served to more than 4,000 diners.
Highlights
- The Ponte Visconteo, once linked by crenellated walls to the Scaliger castle above
- Festa del Nodo d'Amore, third Tuesday of June, with tortellini on the bridge
- The wooden bridge over the Mincio, where scenes of Visconti's Senso were filmed
- San Marco's Scaliger bell tower, holding a bell cast in 1381
- The Mantua to Peschiera cycle path along the Mincio
