Atrani
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
On just 0.12 square kilometres, Atrani is Italy's smallest municipality, a maze of stairways and little squares squeezed into the Dragone valley between two hills, 700 metres from Amalfi. In the days of the Duchy of Amalfi its noble families lived here, and the dukes received their cap of office in San Salvatore de Birecto. From the piazzetta an old passage leads straight onto the beach.
Highlights
- San Salvatore de Birecto and the Moorish-style fountain on the piazzetta
- Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena, built in 1274 high above the sea
- Mary Magdalene's feast on 22 July, when her statue runs up the steps
- Christmas Eve, when a comet star descends from Monte Civita
- Lemon terraces climbing the valley above the houses
