Amatrice
Member of I Borghi più belli d'Italia
This mountain town gave its name to amatriciana, the pasta sauce now cooked all over Italy. Amatrice stands at 955 metres in a high basin of the upper Tronto valley, beneath the Monti della Laga, and the earthquake of 24 August 2016 destroyed most of its historic centre. Around it, inside a national park, beech woods and high meadows climb towards waterfalls and Lazio's highest peak.
Highlights
- Bucatini or spaghetti all'amatriciana, the dish named after the town
- Monte Gorzano, 2,458 m, the highest summit in Lazio
- Waterfalls in the Laga valleys, fullest at the spring snowmelt
- Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park: beech woods and high meadows
- Lago di Scandarello, a reservoir in the south-west of the basin
